This Week: The MAT as an effective vehicle for improvement

This week at The Academies Event in Manchester, Sir David Carter presented his views on how MATs can drive improvement and the perceived benefits of being in a MAT from the viewpoint of both academy and trust leaders. Lisa Crausby (Principal Improvement Director, ATT) also delivered a presentation about the journey of a growing MAT, in particular, highlighting the team effort required to lead improvement. Two crucial elements discussed by both speakers were the need to have a strategic plan that drives improvement and a method of evidencing change.

It was interesting how the two presentations closely reflected and added personal experiences to this week’s Education Select Committee report, which outlined six key characteristics any trust must possess in order to be successful: -

  • Recognition of teaching staff - Opportunities for development and pathways to leadership
  • Regional structures that allow the sharing of best practice and resources
  • Accountability at all levels
  • Robust financial control
  • Shared vision and strong leadership
  • Commitment to improving performance and attainment
